Some notable M&A deals between Japanese and Vietnamese firms

* DIAIF Fund announced its purchase of 25 percent stake in Nutifood.

* Daio Paper Corporation (Daio) and BridgeHead Investment Fund (under Development Bank of Japan) hold 48 percent stake in Saigon Paper JSC.

* Unicharm Group acquired 95 percent stake in Diana.

* Japan-based Sojitz Group bought 51 percent shares of Huong Thuy Production Service and Trading Joint Stock Co, a large food retailer in Vietnam. The company has a transport network nationwide with 12 transit facilities, specializing in providing food and drinks for about 40,000 stores.

* Veglia Laboratories Co together with another Japanese partner acquired 20 percent stake in Viet Esco Co, an affiliate of HCM City Energy Saving Centre.

* Kmix, a family company specializing in maintenance of buildings and roads, has become a strategic shareholder of Huy Bao Service Trading Ltd Co through buying 45 percent stake in this local company in HCM City.

* Nichirei Foods acquired 19 percent stake in Cholimex Food Joint Stock Co. Cholimex is a producer of consumer goods. This sector has seen the biggest volume of M&A deals.

* Ezaki Glico Co, a Japanese manufacturer of confectionery and food, has bough 14 million shares of Kinh Do Co (equaling to 10 percent stake) to prepare providing Glico’s products in Vietnamese market.

* SBI Holdings acquired shares from founding shareholders of FPT Capital to raise its holding into the local firm to the maximum 49%.

* Kirin Holdings, a Japanese beverage company, has acquired wholly shares of Trade Ocean Holdings, the holding company of International Food Joint Stock Co (IFS) whereby Kirin indirectly holds 57 percent stake in IFS.

* Suntory, a Japanese beverage group, has acquired 51 percent stake in PepsiCo in Vietnam.
